NEXT MEETING

May 8, 2010 - 9:45 a.m. - Covenant United Methodist Church

This is a reminder that the next Dystonia meeting is scheduled for May 8, 2010 at 9:45 AM at Covenant United Methodist Church on US-84 in Dothan, in the CLC Building in the usual room.  The plans are to discuss the upcoming Summer Schedule to see what the group thinks, and to also discuss our group going to Birmingham to a meeting in the near future.  I also will give a brief report on the last meeting in Birmingham that was held on April 17, to update all about the new research that is being conducted in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.  There
appears to be some encouraging results (hope I'm not over anxious) coming out of these studies.  I also want to discuss upcoming local festivals/events that are going to be held so we can utilize our "Dystonia Display" and start to publicize "Dystonia Awareness" in the SE Alabama, Florida Panhandle and SW Georgia "Tri-state area".  Please be helping to think about (come up with topics/speakers) for future meetings.  Also encourage anyone that you might know with Dystonia or any family member of someone with Dystonia to attend our meeting.

Television Coverage of Dystonia and Deep Brain Stimulation - April 21

On April 21, 2010, on Channel 4, Dothan, Alabama on the 5:00 news, Ms. Skylar Zwick showed a report (syndicated) concerning a young man, Dystonia and Deep Brain Stimulation.  The links are below. One is the video and the other is a written report.  But, I did see on the video link below the video box, is a written report that is better than the other report.  If you cannot view the video just scroll down and you will see the better report.

Southeast Alabama Branch of the Dystonia Support Group Forms!

Welcome to the Southeast Alabama Branch of the Dystonia Support Group of Alabama.  We say Southeast Alabama, BUT we already have a member from the panhandle of Florida.  We are located in the Tri-State area, including Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.  We are here for anyone from anywhere!  This area has been described as “a Dystonia desert” and we are hoping to change that image.  We must thank the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF) and the Dystonia Support Group of Alabama (DSGA) for having faith and trust in our endeavor.  First, DSGA changed their name to enable a branch.  DMRF gave DSGA and the Southeast Alabama branch their blessings.  Who knows, there may be another part of the state that will become interested.

We are scheduled to meet the second Saturday of each month, but are subject to change.  We meet at Covenant United Methodist Church, 3610 West Main Street, in Dothan, Alabama at 10:30 am, Central Time and are usually finished by 11:30 am, but can stay later.  The meetings have averaged 10 in attendance.  We hope attendance will increase, especially when we get word out.

There are a variety of Dystonia symptoms in our group.  The Support Group is there for any form of Dystonia and for anyone affected by Dystonia – i.e. patient, family member, friend, etc.

We heard from a physician and a pharmaceutical representative willing to speak to us.  One of the best advantages is to hear and learn from each other.  There are plans to attend meetings in Birmingham periodically, participate in socials, and listen to scheduled speakers.

We, the Dystonia Support Group of Alabama – Southeast Alabama Branch, are full of enthusiasm.  We cannot wait to see where the future leads us.  We can take control of our treatments.  Please feel free to contact us and/or attend a meeting and become a part of the Southeast Alabama Branch!  If you have any questions and/or information, you may contact us at DothanDystoniaSupportGroup@gmail.com.

Thanks to everyone involved and we hope to see you soon!
